Most news MCP servers take a few minutes to connect. The differences between them appear later, when your agent needs the full article instead of a headline, or when fifty agents have to share one server. We compared seven of them on what they return and how they're deployed, using each provider's public documentation, and also looked at pricing and licence terms.

What is a news MCP server?

A news MCP server lets an AI agent search and read news through the Model Context Protocol, with no custom integration code. MCP is an open standard for connecting AI agents and LLMs to outside tools and data. Anthropic created it, and in December 2025 donated it to the Agentic AI Foundation, part of the Linux Foundation.

Before MCP, every API an agent used needed its own integration. Now the data source runs as an MCP server, and any compatible client can call it. A news MCP server does this for a news API or a web search API, so searching, filtering and fetching articles become tools the agent can use. For the agent, asking for this morning's headlines or a news event from 2021 is just another tool call.

You register the server once. After that, the agent writes its own queries and pages through the results.

Servers differ most in two places. The first is the response. Some return a headline and a link, others return the full article, and a few return an event with every article that covered it attached. The less a server returns, the more processing your agent or your code has to do afterwards. The second is deployment. A hosted endpoint is one URL that all your agents can share, while a local stdio package has to be installed on every machine that runs an agent.

What to check before committing to a news MCP server

These questions separate the providers and show quickly whether a server holds up under real workloads:

  • How many sources are indexed, and do the countries and languages covered match your pipeline?
  • Do you get the article body back, or only headlines and snippets?
  • Are sentiment, named entities and topic tags added server-side at index time, or is that your pipeline's job?
  • Can you use the JSON downstream as it arrives, and are the schemas flexible enough for the way you query?
  • Is there a published uptime SLA, SOC 2 certification and a defined support response model?
  • Who maintains the MCP server, the API provider or the community?
  • Can you start without having to book a sales call, on a free or entry-level tier?

1. NewsCatcher News API

NewsCatcher's News API page, headlined "Enriched news data", above a demo query returning articles tagged with entities, topic and sentiment
NewsCatcher News API, newscatcherapi.com

NewsCatcher's News API tags every article as it comes in, with an AI summary, its topics, its sentiment and the people, companies and places it mentions. Articles from July 2023 onward carry these tags. The archive goes back further, to January 2019, but older articles come without them. By default the MCP server returns each article's summary and topic, removes duplicate copies and groups articles about the same story.

It runs on SOC 2 Type II certified infrastructure with a 99.95% uptime guarantee. NewsCatcher runs the server itself, and you add it with one URL, https://news-mcp.newscatcherapi.com/mcp. Its code is public on GitHub.

  • Pricing: 7-day free trial. After that, pricing is custom, sized to your pipeline's volume and sources.
  • Best for: Agents handling real workloads that need clean news with duplicates removed and every article summarized and tagged.

2. Perigon

Perigon's homepage, headlined "News intelligence for teams, apps, & AI", over a search box and four use-case cards
Perigon, perigon.io

Perigon groups articles that cover the same occurrence into events, and offers topic pages for pre-configured subject monitoring. Its API can also filter news by distance from a point on the map, and its MCP server has a tool for news about a given city, state or country.

What holds it back for most companies is the licence. Its cheaper plans are for personal use or eligible startups only.

  • Pricing: Free for personal use, with 150 requests a month. Commercial plans start at $24,000 a year. Eligible startups pay $250 or $550 a month.
  • Best for: Agents that need news grouped into events, with the full articles behind them.

3. NewsMCP

The NewsMCP homepage, headlined "The news MCP.", with a "Setup for agents" button on a dot-matrix background
NewsMCP, newsmcp.com

NewsMCP is a free news MCP server built for AI agents. It returns story events, where each event is a cluster of articles covering the same story, with their sources attached. It's scored on corroboration: how many independent newsrooms reported it, across how many distinct domains and languages, and how much of the cluster is syndicated copy.

A unique thing about NewsMCP is that it requires no signup and even works without a key. That means an agent can connect and search straight away. It's the lowest-friction option for agents that need to know what happened and cite it.

It's a hosted remote endpoint at https://mcp.newsmcp.com/mcp.

  • Pricing: Free, with a full commercial licence on every plan. Without a key you get 20 calls an hour and a 7-day lookback. Registering for a free key raises that limit to 50 calls an hour and 14 days lookback. Agents on cloud servers need the key regardless.
  • Best for: Quick answers on what's happening, with sources, at no cost.

4. NewsData.io

NewsData.io's homepage, headlined "Best News API To Search, Collect And Track Worldwide News", with a keyword search box
NewsData.io, newsdata.io

NewsData.io can stream new articles to an agent live. A standing query pushes matching articles over a WebSocket as they publish. It also has dedicated cryptocurrency and financial endpoints with ticker filtering.

There's no named entity disambiguation and no event clustering. A pipeline that expects enriched, deduplicated JSON has to add that itself.

  • Pricing: Free plan with a 12-hour delay and a 48-hour lookback, without article text or sentiment. Paid plans start at $199.99 a month.
  • Best for: Agents that need each new article pushed to them the moment it publishes.

5. World News API

World News API's homepage, headlined "The only News API you'll ever need.", beside an illustration of entity tagging and a JSON sample
World News API, worldnewsapi.com

World News API can filter articles by distance from a lat/long coordinate, which few web search APIs expose directly. It can also pull the front pages of 6,000+ newspapers in 125 countries.

Two constraints decide whether it fits. The MCP server runs over stdio with no hosted remote endpoint. That means it needs to be installed locally. They also limit sentiment analysis to English and German languages, which narrows it if you're analysing news from multilingual sources.

  • Pricing: Free plan with 50 points a day, in exchange for a backlink. Paid plans start at $39 a month.
  • Best for: Agents that need news about a specific place.

6. GNews API

GNews's homepage, headlined "The Best Real-Time News API for Developers", above a "Try GNews API" search box
GNews API, gnews.io

GNews API's free tier delivers only headlines and article metadata, while its paid plans return the whole article. It's a real-time news API aimed at developers, and GNews hosts the MCP server itself at https://mcp.gnews.io, so there's nothing to install.

  • Pricing: Free plan with 100 requests a day and a 12-hour delay, for non-commercial use only. Paid plans, which include the article body, start at €49.99 a month.
  • Best for: Agents that need top stories by category or country from a simple hosted server.

7. newsapi.org

newsapi.org's homepage, headlined "Search worldwide news with code", above example requests and JSON responses
newsapi.org

newsapi.org is a JSON API for finding articles and breaking headlines across news sites and blogs. It's quick to start with, and its paid plans search five years of articles. It returns headlines and article metadata on every plan, although full article content isn't available.

It has no official MCP server, but community-built ones exist if you search for them. Check who maintains the one you pick, since nobody is obliged to update it when the API changes.

  • Pricing: Free for development and testing only, with 100 requests a day and a 24-hour delay. Paid plans start at $449 a month.
  • Best for: Agents that only need headlines and links, like a daily news digest.

How to pick the right news MCP server for your pipeline

Start with what your agent needs back from each search, then look at where it runs.

Does your agent need the full text of each article? NewsCatcher News API, Perigon and World News API return it. NewsData.io and GNews API return it on paid plans only. If headlines and links are enough, newsapi.org and GNews's free plan cover them, and NewsMCP tells you what happened, with sources, without any article text.

Does it work with articles or with events? An agent that quotes, summarizes or pulls facts from articles needs them clean, and NewsCatcher News API removes duplicates and summarizes and tags every article by default. An agent that follows how a story develops is better served by events. Perigon groups articles into events and keeps the full articles behind them, while NewsMCP returns events with corroboration counts and no article text.

Where does your agent run? A hosted server serves every agent from one URL, and NewsCatcher News API, Perigon, NewsMCP and GNews API all run that way. World News API runs only as a local package, so each agent needs its own copy. NewsData.io installs locally too, but you can run it on a server of your own so one copy serves all your agents. newsapi.org has community-built servers only.

Location and live alerts narrow it further. World News API and Perigon both filter news by distance from a point on the map. NewsData.io pushes new articles to your agent the moment they publish, and it has dedicated endpoints for crypto and financial news.

FAQ

What does "official MCP server" mean in practice, and why does it matter?

The API provider maintains an official MCP server itself, so updates follow the API and a reported issue has a clear owner. Community-built servers, like the ones for newsapi.org, carry more reliability and maintenance risk. In production, where uptime and schema stability matter, that risk grows the longer you run them.

Can a free-tier news MCP server handle real AI agent workloads?

As of October 2026, only NewsMCP and World News API allow it. NewsMCP carries a full commercial licence on every tier, the keyless one included, though agents on cloud servers need its free key. World News API's free plan works at a small scale, with 50 points a day and a backlink to worldnewsapi.com required. Every other free option stops at a licence, a delay or a time limit:

  • NewsData.io's free plan delivers news 12 hours late and without article text.
  • GNews API's free plan is for non-commercial use only, and its news arrives 12 hours late.
  • newsapi.org's free plan is for development and testing only, with news 24 hours late.
  • Perigon's free plan carries a personal-use licence.
  • NewsCatcher News API has a 7-day trial rather than a free plan, and pricing after that is custom, set on a call.

Every paid plan here allows production use, though Perigon keeps its cheaper ones for eligible startups.
