# News API quickstart

> Search the last 30 days of news in any language with one request.

The News API searches the news NewsCatcher has crawled in the last 30 days, in
every language. Results are ranked by relevance, publisher authority, coverage
and freshness, and grouped into [stories](/docs/news/stories.md): the articles that
report the same event. Each article comes with a one-line summary.

## Endpoints

| Endpoint | What it does | Charged |
| - | - | - |
| `GET` or `POST /search` | Ranked articles for a request in plain words or keywords. | Yes, by [effort](/docs/news/effort-levels.md) |
| `GET /stories/{story_id}` | Every article of one story. | 1 NCC |
| `GET /subscription` | Your plan, limits and credit balance. | No |

## Your first search

Send the parameters as a JSON body to `POST /search`:

```bash theme={null}
curl -X POST "https://api.newscatcherapi.com/news-api/search" \
  -H "x-api-key: $NEWSCATCHER_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "q": "Tesla recall NOT Cybertruck",
    "effort": "medium",
    "search_window": "2d",
    "languages": ["en", "de"]
  }'
```

`GET /search` takes the same parameters in the query string, with list
parameters as comma-separated strings.

This search:

* ranks with a cross-encoder rerank (`effort=medium`, 5 NCC);
* looks back 2 days instead of the default 7;
* keeps English and German articles only;
* drops articles whose headline, description or summary mention "Cybertruck".

## What comes back

The response has the query as received, the effort that ran, the window that
was searched and the `results`, best first. See
[Response fields](/docs/news/response-fields.md) for every field.
